1. Beyoncé
I mean...it’s Beyoncé. Need I say more?
As an artist she has the perfect blend of vocal talent and performance zest. No matter how you feel about her marriage, religion, child rearing skills, or any of her personal life decisions, there is no denying that this woman has remarkable talent and has made her mark on the music industry forever.
Being in attendance of a Beyoncé concert would not only qualify me for life-long bragging rights, if I could just get close enough for her to drip some sweat on me, I think I could live forever, grow wings, and fly.
2. Janelle Monáe
This powerhouse vocalist is nothing short of a star. From humble beginnings of self promotion (yes out of the back of her car) Monae is a glorious artist with the full package.
I admire everything about her, from the purposefulness of her fashion statements to the honesty in which she articulates herself. You can hear the energy and strength delivered to every track she creates. On her latest album, Electric Lady, Monae is nothing short of electric herself. She features highly accredited artists such as Eryka Badu, Solange, and even Prince. Everything she touches is pure gold and I can't wait for her new project Eephus to launch!
3. Lauryn Hill
Hill has one of the most unique voices that this generation will ever encounter. Fortunately as a 90s baby she is still a hot topic and has not completely been pushed aside as an “Old school” artist. Staying prevalent is difficult for artists especially if they do not put out new material consistently.
This is one of the factors that makes Hill a legendary success. and a top contender on my list. After her collaborations with well respected rap group Fugees, Hill went on to create a solo Album, ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ which has been her only solo project to date. Yet, Hill has left a lasting impression in the hip-hop world with just one album.
Hill is notorious for tardiness, cancellations and the like when on tour. If I ever had the means, I would take that risk to watch Hill do her thing in the flesh. She breaks barriers not only as a female a rapper in a largely male genre, but as a songstress and a poet.
I would love nothing more than to be in a room filled with her sultry, lavender voice. She has a lot of wisdom to offer as well. I feel that a Lauryn Hill concert would be just as educational as it would enjoyable.
4. Elle Varner
While also being one of my fashion Icons, Varner is a quirky and charismatic artist. What I most admire about Varner is that she is a song-writer, musician and a vocalist. I first fell in love with Elle Varner when she released her 2012 mix-tape, Conversational Lush. Yes, I am proud to call myself a day-one fan!
Which is why going to one of her concerts is crucial to my well being.
All of her videos have a smooth sexy finish about them that I'm sure would translate perfectly in a live performance. If you haven't fallen in love with her yet, check out her recent project 4 Letter Word. Varner is a fairly new artist but she is going to be around for a while.
Although her most recent endeavour at the 2015 super bowl halftime performance was lame to some, I was more than engrossed in her lollipop-bubble-gum antics. Admittedly, the feature of Missy Elliot was a pleasant shock and reached into a border where she almost stole the show, I think this fun loving performer has real guts to still cling to such childish and colorful motifs even at the age of 30.
Perry is an interesting mix of rocker chic and ultra pop. Her props and set design remain outrageously frilly while still allowing her vocals to shine through. Katy Perry is a talented singer. I would not endorse a concert attendance if she didn't have a voice. The girl can blow, that's for sure. She can also apparently kiss girls quite well, but that's another post.
